The Astana in Sarawak, a
building of considerable charm, is a grand palace of three substantial bungalows linked
by verandahs and was built in 1870 by Rajah Charles Brooke
as a gift of love to his wife Ranee Margaret. This place
of interest in Sarawak is set
among rolling lawns on the northern bank of the Sarawak
River. It is plainly visible from Pangkalan Batu on the
opposite side of the river and the view here is simply
magnificent.
Occupying a commanding
position, it is now the official residence of the
governor of Sarawak and the venue for important state
functions and it is one of the most photographed tourist
attraction here in Sarawak.
