RANTAU ABANG

EAST COAST OF MALAYSIA

Rantau Abang in Terengganu is a place that should be on every visitor's itinerary. This beautiful beach is located 60 kilometers south of Kuala Terengganu. Here, visitors lay in wait quietly from midnight to dawn to watch giant leatherback turtles laying eggs. The turtles lumbering slowly on the white sandy beaches to lay eggs is a memorable sight. These giant turtles, more than two meters in length and sometimes weighing close to four hundred kilograms is indeed a phenomenal sight to behold. A legend has it that the turtles come here because of a large black stone found here which looks like a giant turtle.

Rantau Abang is one of only six places in the world visited by these leatherbacks turtles, from months of May to September. There was once that over one thousand turtles were spotted in just one season. You will get the view during full moon or when the tide is at its highest level. To get more information of the creatures, visit the Turtle Information Centre (Pusat Penerangan Penyu Rantau Abang) which is operated by the Department of Fisheries. These giant leatherback turtles is a famous icon in Terengganu and also one of the most famous tourist attraction in Malaysia.
