In 1985, Tasik Kenyir in Terengganu was formed by the construction of the Kenyir Dam and subsequently become Malaysia's leading ecotourist destination. This place of interest is located more then fifty kilometers away from Kuala Terengganu and ten kilometers away from Kuala Berang. It is reputed to be one of the largest and most fascinating man-made lake in the world. This famous tourist attraction not only covers an area of about 369 square kilometers, it is also Malaysia's largest rock-filled hydroelectric dam. When the area was inundated by water, most of the hills will be above water level and thus creating about 340 man-made islands and the view from the peak of the Kenyir Dam at the Sultan Mahmud Hydroelectric Station overlooking the countryside is one that is to be remembered for a long time.

 

Surrounded by a lush tropical jungle, the Kenyir Lake is a popular and ideal retreat for nature lovers, anglers, photo enthusiasts and fun seekers whereby the fun never seems to end. This is why this unique place of interest in Terengganu is always packed with local and foreign visitors. Some of the activities which could be carried out at this famous tourist attraction in Terengganu are fishing, swimming, canoeing, boating and jungle trekking.

 

Due to the cleanliness of the lake and abundance of food supply, the Kenyir Lake has a wide variety of freshwater fish such as Baung (catfish), Toman (snake head), Kelah(carp), Kelisa and Lampam. Some of the main attractions seen here are its caves and waterfalls which can be reached by boat from Pengkalan Gawi or straight from the resorts. Trips up the rivers that empty into the lake can also be very fulfilling such as the journey up the beautiful Sungai Petuang. Cheap accommodations such as houseboats, floating chalets and lakeside resorts are also available to visitors and the tranquil atmosphere found here will definitely relax you and the best time to come here is when the water is at its highest because this is the time when the lake is at its most spectacular state. Kenyir Lake is one of the top travel destination in Malaysia.
