HUMLA DISTRICT AND JUMLA - TREKKING

MAIN TREKKING SITES

NEPAL

The trek from the administrative center of Humla district, Simikot, to the Tibetan border is usually used to go to western Tibet whereby Mount Kailash is one the main places of interest in this area. A few organizations can be seen here trying to promote community based tourism opportunities between Simikot and the border but overall the general tourism related facilities in this area are both relatively underdeveloped and scarce.

Visitors can go to Simikot either by taking a plane from Nepalgunj or to trek from Rara Lake, which is the largest lake in Nepal and also a main tourist attraction. The beautiful lake is surrounded by the Rara National Park. Tourists are warned beforehand that most schedule flights to Simikot are usually unreliable due to the unpredictable weather conditions but if you are traveling in a large group, you always have the choice of chartering a private plane.

The method preferred by most people to get to Rara is to take a flight from Nepalgunj to Jumla, and then trek for about two to three days to get to the park. Another way is to combine a trek to Lower Dolpa and a visit to Rara National Park. Once you are at Dolpa, you can reach Jumla and the park within seven days by trekking west from Dolpa. Trekkers are recommended to arrange their trek through a government recognized trekking agency and the recommended way to trek here is in a group trekking through a good trekking agency that can meet the requirements and all the contingencies that may arise.
