Situated in the
central west of Nepal, the central point of this
area is the Shey Phoksundo National Park. The
main attraction of this remote and rugged
protected area is that it is both scenically and
culturally attractive and the trekking season
here is usually from June to September. The
Lower Dolpa trek circuit can be finished in
eight days from Juphal and then back to Juphal.
This circuit can be trekked either clockwise or
anticlockwise, depending on individual
preference but no matter which direction is
taken, the focal points of the trek are the
Phoksundo Lake and the Tarap Valley.
In comparison to
Lower Dolpa, there are fewer trekkers going in
to the heavily restricted upper Dolpa section of
the Shey Phoksundo National Park. The wild and
untouched landscape is the main reason that
attracts tourists to this region whereby
geographically, it is similar to the Tibetan
Plateau which is generally dry, cold and
sparsely vegetated. Trekkers are recommended to
arrange their trek through a government
recognized trekking agency because of their
dependability.
