The
Asian Civilisations Museum, located on 39
Armenian Street, is famous for its exhibition on the Peranakan culture. A Malay
term meaning 'locally born' and sometimes being
referred to as Baba and Nyonya, Peranakans refer to
the descendants of the early Chinese community
who settled in the Malay Archipelago from the
17th century. Among the exhibits on display are
the intricate beadwork, embroidery, jewelry and
traditional costume usually associated with the Peranakan

and interesting displays such as the
Chinese ceramics and Buddhist artifacts are the
visitors' favorite. This famous tourist
attraction in Singapore is found at the old Tao
Nan school building and its main attraction is
the re-creation of a huge altar from the mansion
of a famous Peranakan family in Singapore.
Visitors will surely treasure the experience of
the unique culture of the Peranakan which is
sometimes being referred to as being the exotic
blend of Malay, Chinese and European influences.
