The Singapore
Botanic Gardens, founded by an agri-horticultural
society and located at Holland
Road, allows visitors to take a leisurely stroll through the oldest
public park in Singapore and the birthplace of
the rubber industry in the region, a perfect
place to rest and relax. This tourist attraction
came about after the first Botanical and
Experimental Garden which was set up in 1822 on
Government Hill at Fort Canning was closed down
in 1829.
Tourists can walk through
a section of the primary forest and listen to
the rhythmic sounds of crickets all around you
and this park is packed in the evening with
visitors who come here for a stroll to enjoy the
tranquil atmosphere to relief stress from the
daily hectic workplace. Maintained by the
Botanic Gardens National Parks Board, this botanic gardens
played a vital role in fostering agricultural
development in Singapore and the region through
collecting, experimenting, growing and
distributing potentially useful plants whereby
quality research, both horticultural and
botanical, has been conducted here through the
years.
This place also
takes the lead in orchid breeding and
hybridization programmes and played a big role
in Singapore's Garden City programme through the
continual introduction of plants of
horticultural and botanical value. If orchids
fascinates you, visit the spectacular National
Orchid Garden and be amazed by over 60,000 varieties
and colors of orchids on display whereby some
rare orchids are also being exhibit here. Some
of the famous attractions seen here include the
Bandstand, Eco-lake, Symphony Lake, and the
Visitor Centre. This is a great place to spend a
couple of hours just before sundown.
