WORLD WAR II HERITAGE SITES

Changi Museum and Changi Chapel in SingaporeThe Changi Chapel and Museum, located on 1000 Upper Changi Road North, is housed within the open-air courtyard of the new museum and is a symbolic replica of the many chapels that were built during the Japanese Occupation.

First built in 1988 by Changi Prison inmates, this pilgrimage site stands today as a monument for those who stood with unflinching faith and dignity in the face of seemingly hopeless odds during those dark years and this place is used as a yearly meeting place for ex-prisoners or prisoners of war (POW). This historical place of Changi Chapel and Museum           interest in Singapore has become one of the most famous tourist attractions in Singapore whereby the families of prisoners who have stayed here make it a point to visit this famous landmark in Singapore.

Letters, photographs, drawings and personal effects displayed in the Changi Museum give an insight into the lives and thoughts of the 50,000 civilians and soldiers who were imprisoned in Changi and one of the museum's main attractions is the replica of The Changi Murals, a series of magnificent wall paintings recreated from the originals painted by bombardier Stanley Warren. The sleepy Changi Village is also located here whereby it is the jumping off point for the rural retreat of Pulau Ubin.
