The Chinatown
Heritage Centre (CHC), located at 48 Pagoda
Street, is
housed in three restored traditional shophouses and is a
showcase of the rich Chinese heritage of Chinatown
displaying the
lifestyles, traditions and rituals of the early
immigrants who lived and worked there.
Two shophouses are given over to sound and
vision installations and dispaly. The third is a
faithful re-creation of a shophouse as it was
back in the good old days.
The installations
trace the history of the Chinese settlement in
Singapore, graphically illustrating the pitfalls
awaiting the Photo: Chinatown Heritage Centre unwary and naive which include
prostitution, opium, gambling, and the notorious
secret societies. The model restoration is quite
good, with the use of effects, sounds and props
to enhance visitor experience. The Chinatown
Heritage Centre even have opium-smoking rooms.
This place offers tourists a quick way to know a
lot more about the rough early days and about
Chinese beliefs and lifestyle. Encapsulated in a series of carefully designed
galleries, the memories, sights, sounds and
smells are presented to help visitors appreciate
the diverse heritage of Chinatown and its
people whereby you can learn and appreciate this
area's history through its interactive and
imaginative displays which has made this
Chinatown museum
a famous attraction in Chinatown.
