Officially
opened on the 12th October 2002,
Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay is the national
performing arts centre of Singapore. Regarded as
Singapore's most unique structure, this tourist
attraction sits on 6 hectares of main waterfront
land by Marina Bay which is part of Singapore's
civic district making up of many wonderful
heritage, arts and entertainment facilities.
Esplanade is also known as the durian, a
tropical fruit, because its twin domes which are
clad in glass and metallic sunshades looks very
similar to it. The Concert Hall here can
accommodate over one thousand and six hundred
people and has incredible acoustics by
world-renowned acoustician Russell Johnson of
ARTEC Consultants Inc, USA which include
reverberation chambers and an acoustic canopy
that allows the Photo: Esplanade in Singapore
hall to easily adapt to various music styles
without a drop in sound quality.
The Esplanade also
has a two thousand seat Theatre which covers
four levels of traditional European opera houses
whereby its unique horseshoe shape allows a more
intimate setting between the audiences and the
stage. There are also two main studios here
which provide flexible space for small-scale
performances and rehearsals. To cater for
outdoor shows, there is the Outdoor Theatre.
Another main attraction seen here is the Esplanade
Mall which spans over three storeys whereby
guests can enjoy an interesting entertainment,
food and retail mix.
This place has since provide a wide range of
interesting and exciting programmes catering to
almost everybody whereby an extensive menu is
designed for them to choose from with each
having their own unique style of performances
that include classical music, international
dance and theatre productions, jazz and blues
music, Klais pipe organ performances, monthly
free concerts, morning concerts, new music and
contemporary dance and free outdoor performances
along the spectacular waterfront. This place of
interest in Singapore has now become a famous
landmark due to its unique durian design and is
Singapore's cultural centre, hosting arts and
musical performances all year round.
