GEYLANG SERAI - SINGAPORE

ETHNIC DISTRICTS

Geylang Serai is the cultural centre of the Singaporean Malays and this colorful neighborhood is located on the eastern section of Singapore's Central Area. This place of interest has long been the home of Singapore's ethnic Malay community ever since they were transferred from their floating villages at the mouth of the Singapore River to this part of the country during the colonial days. Several exclusive Malay districts were created by the mid 1930s such as the Kampong Melayu which later became part of today's Geylang Serai.

Malay Village in Geylang Serai, SingaporeOne of the main attraction that can be seen in this area is the Malay Village which was specially created to replicate the history and the heritage of this early settlement. At the Malay Village, tourists can travel back in time and find out more about the traditional lifestyle of the Malays at Kampung Days. Visitors can also witness Malay crafts such as batik printing, kite-making and traditional kampung games. An excellent collection of artifacts that include weaving tools, musical instruments and a grand display of a traditional Malay wedding inclusive of hand-sewn garments, accessories and a Bridal Chamber is showcased at the Cultural Museum. A better understanding into the lives of the Malays can also be seen at the Muslim Showcase, Hall of Fame and Geylang Serai Corner. Interesting cultural performances can be seen at the Floating Restaurant. Tourists who are looking for a different side of modern Singapore will be recommended to make their Malay Village in Geylang      way to Geylang Serai since this famous tourist area offers its visitors unique shophouse scenery, a famous red light district, foreign workers quarters and karaoke lounges which are almost untouched by urban projects and developments.
