Lau Pa Sat (meaning
old market), a popular tourist area, is actually
a famous food centre located at Boon Tat Street
within the central area of the central business
district area in Singapore. This tourist
attraction, used to be known as the Telok Ayer Market, is a
historic building and also the largest remaining
Victorian filigree cast-iron structure in
Singapore.
Because of its
unique architecture, the Malays fondly call this
place pasar besi which means iron market. The
Singapore Government closed the Telok
Ayer Tawar to facilitate the
rapid developments that was taking place around its
surrounding areas and was rebuilt in the late
1980's using the original cast-iron Photo: Lau
