Photo: Statue of Sir Stamford Raffles
The Singapore River
separates the colonial district and the central
business district and this historic place is the
site of the first British arrivals. This famous
tourist attraction along Boat
Quay is where Singapore's founder, Sir Stamford
Raffles, is believed to have first stepped
ashore and is marked by a statue made of pure
white polymarble. The original figure stands
outside Victoria Concert Hall and Theatre, and
was cast in dark bronze by Thomas Woolner. Sir
Stamford Raffles was believed to have first set
foot here in Singapore in 1819. Across the rive
is Boat
Quay which is one of the liveliest spot in Singapore
with its many entertainment outlets and
restaurants. The rows of conserved warehouses
comes alive at night with its riverside cafes
and pubs.
