This
Singapore River that runs
through the city used to be the lifeline of
Singapore whereby this famous tourist attraction
is steeped in history right from its earliest
beginnings. It was where the first immigrants
eked out a meager living and helped transform
Singapore from an obscure fishing village to a
great seaport and the main artery of trade.
The British settlement in Singapore was built
here on the Singapore River. It was also here
that the Temasek Kingdom made its home back in
the 14th century. Singapore River now separates the central
business district and the colonial district on
its northern bank.
Tourists can now
visit all the places of interest very easily as
the whole area has been developed so can walk
from place to place in comfort. Soak in the tranquil ambience of
the riverside when you visit Photo: Singapore
River the Merlion Park,
the city's main landmark, located at the river mouth, or at the Landing
Site of Raffles located behind the Parliament
House. Then you can stroll past The Fullerton
Singapore along the river. Visit the oldest
mosque on the island, the Omar Kampong Melaka
Mosque or the interesting Taoist Tan Si Chong Su
Temple or simply wander through the Asian
Civilisations Museum at Empress Place to learn
more about the region's heritage. Other
attractions located nearby include the Old
Parliament House, The Padang, St Andrews
Cathedral, Chijmes, the Singapore History Museum
and Fort Canning Park.
Then, when it is
cooler in the evening, enjoy a beer or a
sumptuous meal at one of the many restaurants at
Boat Quay (the first section of the river) or

is located a
little further down. Enjoy browsing at the shops
located within the restored warehouses at Clarke
