PRASAT HIN KHAO PHANOM RUNG - BURI RAM

BURI RAM - THAILAND

NORTHEAST THAILAND (I-SAN)

Ancient Khmer ruins are the major attraction of Buri Ram, with a number of temple ruins that were originally built between the 10th and 13th centuries. The largest, most important and most spectacular of these temples is the hilltop temple complex of Prasat Hin Khao Phanom Rung which is built on top of an ancient extinct volcano. Second in magnificence only to Nakhon Ratchasima's Phimai, the site combines architectural wonder with a superb location that commands panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and it has been converted into a Buddhist temple although it was first built as a Hindu monument.

The most magnificent part of this Angkor monument is the promenade leading to the main gate and the craftsmanship here represents the pinnacle of Khmer artistic achievement. Guided tours by English-speaking guides are available while a visitors centre nearby has a scale model of the area together with exhibits on artifacts found at this site.
