Renowned for its
I-san food, music and folk dancing, and its hand-woven silk, Khon Kaen
lies in the heart of the northeast. The
provincial capital city is a large modern city, where
a good choice of hotels and restaurants make it
an extremely inviting place for a stopover en
route to other destinations to the north and
east. It is also here that the northeast's
largest university, Khon Kaen University, is
located but the most visited place by tourists
are the silk-weaving villages.
Its main attraction
is the Khon Kaen National Museum which exhibits
ancient art and artifacts. The best time to come
here is during the Silk and Phuuk Siaw festival
which is held from end of November to the
beginning of December. This festival celebrates
the planting of the mulberry tree which is used
for the production of silk and is held on the
Ratchadanuuson Park in front of the Provincial
Hall while the most important part of the Phuuk
Siaw ceremony is that it requires one to tie
threads round one's wrists for spiritual
protection.
