Photo: Signboard in Nong Khai, gateway to Laos
Stretched out along
the banks of the Mekong River, opposite the
Laotian capital of Vientiane, Nong Khai is an
attractive province, known for its superb river
views. At Nong Khai town, the Mekong is spanned
by the 1,190 m Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge which was
opened in 1994 and has become one of the busiest
border points between Thailand and Laos.
This charming little provincial
capital, distinguished by a handful of fine
temples, serves as a gateway to Laos, as well as
being an extremely pleasant spot in its own
right. Among the attractions here are the Sala
Kaew Ku at Wat Khaek temple which is a marvelous
sculpture garden, the Talat Tha Sadet market
along Th Rimkhong and the Village Weaver
Handicrafts which is a good place to buy
hand-made clothes and high-quality fabrics to
take home as souvenirs.
