For most of the
year, Surin is a place of deep rural
tranquility, but in late November, the
provincial capital comes spectacularly alive as it
hosts the annual Elephant Round-Up. This
exciting and colorful annual elephant festival spectacle celebrates the
remarkable role elephants have played in Thai
history and the development of the country with
activities such elephant rides, elephant races,
tug-of-war games and battle re-enactment shows
for the enjoyment of visitors. It
is a very special occasion and this is not to be
missed.
Surin is also known
for its interesting mix of dialects and customs,
and the most well-known product here is silk
which is of very high quality and its famous
silk weaving villages at Khwaosinarin and Ban
Janrom. Most visitors use this place as a base
for day trips to Ban Tha Klang in Tha Tum
District for elephants viewing or visit the
Phanom Rung, the most perfectly intact Angkor
temples here or simply take a walk along the
night bazaar to shop for souvenirs.
